Most commercial drain cleaning de-cloggers contain corrosive ingredients such as sodium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite that can permanently damage eyes and skin. Some can be fatal if ingested. To unclog drains use a “snake” plumbing tool to manually remove blockage, or try suction removal with a plunger. To disinfect drains, pour a cup or two of vinegar down them twice a week. Ordinary vinegar can kill up to 99 percent of bacteria. Taken from National Geographic “Green Guide”. Another drain opener: Pour ½ cup of baking soda followed by ½ cup of warm vinegar. Let sit 30 minutes then flush with boiling water. The Green Team

If you would like to learn more about what is going on in our environment here are a few films that have recently come on the market and may be of interest to you. “Food Inc.” - you will find out about the food we buy at our local supermarkets and serve to our families, and “Flow”, a film about the growing privatization of the world’s dwindling fresh water supply with an unflinching focus on politics, pollution, human rights, and the emergence of a domineering world water cartel. Both of these films are available at the Elmhurst Public Library. Look ahead for another film soon to be available, “Fresh”, a film that revels in the joy of growing good food sustainably. Good films for family discussions relating to caring for God’s creation! If you are interested in helping Epiphany going greener, please call Martha Clark.

Green Development is a “labor of love.” Maxine Austin and her brothers Doug and Wilbert thought about the future of their 80 acre family farm. Since it is located just outside the Janesville, WI city perimeters, the land would attract a typical developer who would probably create a typical suburban sprawl. They had wonderful memories of skating on frozen fields in the winter and swimming in Fisher Creek in the summer. “I feel privileged to have been raised on a farm,” Maxine said. “It’s a wonderful way to grow up. With animals and wide open spaces, there was always something to do, something to explore.” Austins’ love for their land lead them to create the green development “Fisher Creek Neighborhood.”
