Eighty percent of the jobs being filled today come from networking contacts. The way networking works is a friend or professional contact that you know, knows someone who has knowledge of a job opening. Usually this 2nd or 3rd level contact provides us with the job notice that results in ultimately getting hired.

Over half of the jobs available today are never posted. They aren’t on Career Builder or Monster. They aren’t in the newspaper want ads. They are filled by personal referrals. For example, someone knows that there is an opening at XYZ company. Many times these are filled from within the organizations. It is usually who you know, not what you know that results in getting the interview and ultimate job we are looking for. With the jobless rate at over 10 percent it is extremely difficult sending resumes to be one of the three or four candidates from scores of applications received to get called for the job interview.
Cal Root will be starting up a job search networking group. We will all benefit from each others knowledge and contacts. In my job search I have accumulated several search tools and information which should be helpful in finding the ideal career for each of us. We will look at ways to market ourselves favorably. Help each other in networking and getting our name out there.
Cal has information on free classes to help in writing your resume, cover letters, business cards, and handbills. This is a support group to keep a positive attitude and keep us motivated in finding the job for which we have been looking.
Meetings will be on a weekly basis. Everyone is welcome to attend. Contact Cal at cal_root@yahoo.com or call 630-336-2561 for meeting information (my phone number has changed from what is listed in the church directory).
